Mush T'seus - Saturday, December 16, 2000, 6:21 PM --------------------------------------------------------- Weyrling Barracks This vast building was once the Weyrhall for the "West" installation of Southern Weyr but has been remodeled into a fully functioning Weyrling barracks complete with it's own large infirmary for weyrling injuries and ailments, and it's own kitchen for cooking meals for the weyrlings stationed so far from the Main Weyr area. Cots line each wall seperated by a door in the east wall, as well as ones in the south and north walls. Large windows allow cool breezes into the crowded barracks on those balmy to hot Southern nights. Two doors in the west end of the barracks let on to the infirmary and kitchen areas, respectively. You notice a large wooden 'shelf' on the far wall. "+Lhelp" is available here. People: T'seus Exits: Kitchen <K> Infirmary <INF> East Door <ED> South Door <SD> North Door <ND> Andrai is perched at the edge of her cot, some sewing item or another draped in her lap, attention and focus placed upon it and the needle in her hand. Carefully, the rows of stiches are made. It seems to be going easily enough, so, linen it must be. By the color of it, likely a tunic of 'Rai's. Amiranda backs up against the wall, still maintaining some note of inconspicuousness. Tylia is seated cross-legged on her cot, two snoozing firelizards curled up in her lap. Both of their hide's appear to be freshly oiled, hinting at what she was doing before now. Currently she looks to be sitting as still as possible to not bother the sleeping creatures. Must be working very well, as far as attention in this particular greenling's quarters goes. There isn't a single pause in the stitching done by Andrai, as there shouldn't be; the weyrling is apparently quite adept at this sorts of thing. The downside? Attention is focused there and only there for the sake of keeping fingers whole and stitching straight. T'seus stands near the barracks' entrance, chatting with another member (NPC) of the weyrlingmaster staff. They're obviously waiting for the weyrlingmaster and everybody knows the lesson to come is one of the more important one so many 'lings seem a bit nervous as they looks over toward their teachers. Amiranda clears her throat, wincing a bit as it tickles her. An arch of the brow is sent towards T'seus as she strides over to the Assistant Weyrlingmaster, now that her presence has been, in some short manner, announced. Andrai just hardly misses stabbing herself in the finger with the Weyrwoman's throat clearing and, at least quasi-intelligently, the weyrling ceases her efforts in mending at least long enough to recognize who that was. Upon doing so, the greenling blinks and stands, setting her 'stuff' aside, offering a polished salute as a matter of reflex. Tylia leans back slowly in an attempt to get in a more comfortable position. She freezes a bit at hearing Amiranda's throat clearing and looks over in the Weyrwoman's direction, sending a smile along with an absent salute. Her attention then goes back down to the two snoozing firelizards in her lap and she frowns, probably debating whether to wake them or not. A subtle movement, at the periphery of her sightline, causes Mira to turn and greet both Andrai and Tylia with a warm salute in return, before she lowers her voice and quietly begs a word with T'seus. T'seus turns around and nods politely to the weyrwoman "Evening ma'am. Going to attend to the mating flight lecture?" he inquires. Andrai finds her release in the return salute, therefore reclaiming her seat. The sewing isn't picked up again, however, and is rather much left to it's own devices, attention focused on Amiranda -- and, once his voice and location register, on T'seus. An eyebrow raises slightly at the foreshadowing in that, but, being polite and all, the weyrling busies herself with cleaning up her mending things. Tylia gently touches her green firelizard in a half-attempt to wake her. It does succeed atleast, causing the small 'lizard to raise her sleepy head and give a soft chirp, which in turn wakes the bronze 'lizard next to her. Tylia gives a sigh of relief, grinning down at the small creatures. Amiranda flushes a bit, "Oh...so THAT was the subject of the lecture I've been invited to? I had just received word that my presence was desired at a lecture of 'great importance'," a smile surfaces to her lips as she looks over at the spying weyrlings, "there was no signature." Andrai isn't spying, of course. She's being her usual -- the epitome of innocence. The only things wrong with that is the antithesis juxtaposition of her real personality and the fact that her dragon has a green hide. Pity, and half of it isn't even her fault. Maintaining her air of innocence and complete impartiality to the shaking news of the lecture, 'Rai folds up the tunic she was mending after carefully slotting the needle through a small bunch of the fabric. T'seus smiles and nods to the weyrwoman "Yes. And I guess Kyraa probably sent you this message. We're currently waiting for the weyrlingmaster to start the lecture." he looks toward the entrance briefly before turning back his attention to Amiranda "I guess she asked you to attend so you could tell the weyrlings about gold flights." Tylia gently pokes Kyne a bit more to wake him up, and the bronze gives a loud chirp, but moves from the girl's lap and onto the cot. Tylia grins and gently scoops up Ayla and places her next to the bronze, giving each an affectionate scratch. Now having her lap free, she stretches and moves to a hang her legs over the side of the cot. Andrai is running out of things to arrange now, alas. Once the tunic and all associated sundry are placed safely away, 'Rai looks up and over towards the assistant weyrlingmaster and the Weyrwoman, pale eyes shifting from one point of interest to the next. That epitomized version of innocent fades out in favor of, quite simply, curiousity. Amiranda ponders that a moment, looking slightly hesitant, or perhaps a mite nervous, "Hmm, well, I haven't really prepared..." she comments, eyes flickering over the expectant faces of the weyrlings, "but I could..." Expectant's one word for it. Or, perhaps if you're looking at that particularly blueling over there, fear. Apprehension? Vagueness? Curiousity? Avid? Expectant certainly does apply. Andrai, however, doesn't quite fit into that catagory -- she'll protect herself from getting into something she'll regret by figuring out what it is she's expecting first. This requires listening. That much, at least, this weyrling can handle. Tylia brushes a stray lock of hair out of her face and tucks it behind one ear, her eyes wandering around the Barracks as she waits for the start of the lecture. Both of her firelizards have resituated themselves near the head of her cot, and have since fallen back to sleep. T'seus smiles widely and nods to Amiranda. "Thank you very much, Amiranda." then he turns to the second assistant weyrlingmaster "Maybe we should start with the basics, Kyraa isn't probably done yet with the manned flight lesson of the second weyrling group." He then looks between the weyrwoman and the other asst weyrlingmaster for their approval. Amiranda inhales deeply, "Well, then. Please forgive me for my lack of preparation. I'll fill in as much as I can about Gold flights before Kyraa arrives with her own materila..." Amiranda nods towards T'seus, "Sounds wonderful, you just tell me where I come in." Andrai, retaining her quite precarious seat on the edge of the clean (too clean, really) cot, folds her hands in front of her, resting them on her lap. Gaze, still curious and perhaps, now, a bit wary, falls between the assistant weyrlingmaster(s) and the Weyrwoman. And there's the expectancy. As trained as she was in the art of sitting still for even the most boring of subjects, it was generally required that the full outline of the subject be provided. Ah, what a far cry these holds be. Nonetheless, silence, just as all good weyrlings should note, is golden. Or green. Well, 'Rai's not saying a thing, 'tany rate. Amiranda eyes T'seus with growing curiousity, and clear uncertainty. Tylia's gaze also wanders over to the Assistant Weyrlingmaster and the Weyrwoman, perhaps waiting for something to happen. T'seus nods as he gets both Amiranda and the other Asst Weyrlingmaster's approval. "Yes Ma'am." he then turns and calls "Please, can I have your attention. I'll start today's lecture ... mating flights." Too bad Pern doesn't have its very own Jeopardy theme, no dah. Andrai shall have to suffer without musician accompany; it sure makes the time pass slowly, but nonetheless, it passes. 'Rai, already as expectant and eager to listen as any weyrlingmaster could which his/her pupils to be, catches the full force of the announcement. So the rumor -- and the slice of information caught ahead of time -- was truthful. Hrm. Like the good little weyrling she's deciding to be, the young woman merely blinks and nods to show that, yes, she is paying attention. For now. Tylia focuses her attention fully upon T'seus, and nod her head in understanding towards him. She rests her hands in her lap and awaits the start of the lecture. Amiranda steps aside as the Weyrlingmaster enters, looking a bit relieved. Kyraa comes in, cheeks a bit on the flushed side, and smiles warmly to everyone..and also a bit appologetically, as she seems to be a bit on the late side. T'seus takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly, "Today, I'll be lecturing you on mating flights ..." His fingers tap absently on his leg, not having noticed Kyraa's entrance yet "...This is a very important a very important lecture. /Every/ one of you will eventually participate in a mating flight. The greenriders and Tylia will have /no/ choice, and you with male dragons will find it /extremely/ difficult to keep them grounded when a green or a gold flies." Amiranda nods in agreement to that statement. Andrai's attentive gave flicks evermuch quickly towards Kyraa for her quite timely entrance. She nods her greeting and offers a sharp, yet inconspicuous salute, attention returning back to T'seus as he begins to speak. Again, she really is paying attention; see that twitch in the corner of her mouth? No, not going up, going -down-. Nearly frowning still must be better than not listening, but aside from that it's in response to the fact that, in this matter at least, she has no choice. Kyraa smiles and nods as T'seus speaks, making eye contacts with a few of the Weyrlings to make sure they're paying close attention to his words. Tylia looks past T'seus and gives the woman a smile of greeting and a salute as well, before her attention goes back to T'seus as he speaks. T'seus adds "Mating flights are a normal occurance for dragons, happening several times a turn for greens and once or twice a turn for golds." he pauses and glances over at the Weyrlingmaster "Would you like to continue, Kyraa. Or should I?" Kyraa chuckles. "You're doing a wonderful job T'seus. Please, continue." She smiles gently. "We'll each be able to speak a bit later about the different roles." She grins, indicating herself and Amiranda. Andrai has to pause at that, though there's not very much movement at all in which she can pause. None the less, she does it, remaining entirely motionless for about two or three heartbeats. Then, to no one, she mouths 'several times a turn' and looks absolutely shocked and astonished, though that reaction in itself is quickly hid behind a mask of educational curiousity. Nose twitches at the Weyrlingmaster's response before attention, as ever, is turned unequivically back to the brownrider. Amiranda smiles wryly to Kyraa, "Ah...yes, of course." Tylia shifts into a cross-legged position absently during the talking, her eyes remaining on T'seus throughout, although it slides once to Kyraa momentarily as the Weyrlingmaster speaks. T'seus nods to Kyraa and Amiranda before turning back his attention to the group of weyrlings "Before a dragon rises their rider often experiences what is called proddiness. This can vary in degree lasting anywhere from two or three sevendays to just the day before the flight. Often the rider affected may not realize it but you know it when you see a proddy rider. Its most common to start about a sevenday before the female rises." he looks over to the two female rider for any comment of their part. Amiranda nods, "On the average, yes," she confirms. Andrai does what any /normal/, polite person would do when fidgeting is called for. She twiddles her thumbs. Fingers interlaced as they are, ensemble of two fists resting once-motionlessly on her lap... it's only a very easy thing before the thumbs start to twiddle. And twiddle they do. The part that the brownrider goes over now, this period of proddiness, is something more familiar to the holdbred lass, so, while she does listen raptly, she doesn't feel the need to twitch so much. In time. Kyraa clears her throat. "Yes...and..most green and goldriders act very differently when they are proddy. Some have the temper of a stringed wherry..others, well.." Shee thinks a moment. "Others flirt /constantly/ and dress in less and less clothing." She chuckles. "Myself..I don't even feel it for a day after Hoseath starts to get brighter." She chuckles. Tylia nods her head absently to both T'seus and Kyraa, listening intently to any comments that might be said. She doesn't twitch, as some of the others might be doing, but simply takes a calm stance throughout the lecture. T'seus nods to Kyraa and Amiranda, Kyraa's comment even gets a slight chuckle. He then frowns slightly and seems to remember something important and says "First off and before any of you ask, the sexual activity caused by the flight /is/ avoidable, but only if either both participants have both the willpower and the desire to avoid it. In my opinion, it's better just to give in, as avoiding the release can lead to problems later on. The other way is for the riders to be in separate weyrs during the flight. This is not always possible. While we are usually able to determine when a dragon will rise, this is not always the case, and exact times are near impossible to predict. Should you be caught outside of your weyr when the dragons /do/ rise, go immediately to the nearest unoccupied guest weyr." Andrai is twitching, but at least she's keeping that movement localized to her thumbs and eyes alone. Attention shifts from rider to rider to rider as each adds in their own part on this mating flights, thing, and the furor of the twitching increases slighlty at Kyraa's mention of the effects. In an effort to dismiss that for some pleasanter side of things, the greenling returns her attention to the assistant weyrlingmaster handling the lecture, and she returns to listen. Of course, that which she hears is hardly better than that what was heard -- worse, in fact. Twitching stretches back up to that corner of the weyrling's mouth again, and there it stays throughout that entire explanation. Twitch of thumbs, twitch of lips, twitch of attention. Twitch, twitch, twitch. Amiranda shifts in place and lifts her voice to be heard amongst the weyrling throng, "Many often know when a gold is to rise...even moreso than the greens..." Kyraa notes Andrai's discomfort and smiles reasuringly to the Weyrling, giving her an encouraging nod. Kyraa nods toward Amiranda as well with deffinate agreement. T'seus sighs and adds "That's one of the few drawbacks of riding a dragon, is that you can not always choose your partners. Your dragon may prefer another dragon, though you may not like that rider. The best thing to do is to arrange for substitute partners, for though in a flight all dragons are equal, some dragons are more equal in the female's mind." Amiranda says "This is because when the Gold becomes proddy, since her emotions are so intense, it is as if part of this is rubbing off on the rest of the Weyr, and you may well find some residents acting peculiar in relation..." Tylia glances between each of the people speaking, absently drumming her fingers on her thigh for something to do while listening. Not quite twitching, but perhaps close to it. Andrai is hardly reassured, however. More twitching -- or rather, she's still twitching. Glance floats, now, between the Weyrlingmaster and the assistant weyrlingmaster, back and back again. On the brownrider it hovers a moment, the weyrling having willed herself to listen to the sorts of information avoided by the hold-bred such as herself but necessary to weyr-life as a dragonrider. Nose twitches, just once, and eyes then flick towards the Weyrwoman. Amiranda nods to T'seus, "You will not be able to control your own emotions when amidst a flight...not without much struggle, and even then, chances are, you will give in before your dragon will. You will be linked in that bond with your dragon, striving just as much as she will, or he will, to escape, or win the flight, whatever the case may be." Amiranda tries her best to reassure in spite of such sobering information, "Despite whom you may end up in the furs with, you'll find that most are understanding, and you can lead a normal life apart from what happened." T'seus smiles and nods to Amiranda before concentrating back on the lecture "Okay, back to the flight itself. Mmmm ... where did I stop? ... Yeah, proddiness. As Kyraa and Amiranda already said, a few days to a week before the flight, the female's rider will begin acting strange. The behavior differs for every rider. Some get irritable and snappish; others get extremely hyper and frisky. Some get more ... hmm ... promiscuous, some less. It's generally a good idea to avoid irritating the female's rider. I've seen some get very violent when provoked by a simple comment on the fact that they're proddy." Kyraa thinks a moment, and then says quietly, as an addition to Amiranda's comment. "In essence..you become your lifemate in a flight." She says seriously, but with a soft smile to some of those who seem worried. Tylia raises a hand to brush that annoying lock of hair from her face once again, her attention fully upon T'seus as he speaks. Once again, that finger drumming starts up again as the lecture moves on. Andrai is still listening, which is a sign for her determination or her acceptance or her sense of duty or... something. One or all or none of those. And then, maybe more than that, or having no relevance whatsoever. Pick something. She does listen to all, attention flicking, again and still, from rider to rider to rider and back again as each comment is squeezed out and in turn sponged up. Twitching continues, though it's on less of a scale. The part about female-rider violence, however, attracts a small amount of attention; a raised eyebrow, in fact. T'seus continues the lecture "The female will nap before she actually rises, during this time the interested males become aware and prepare for it by blooding. When they are finished, or the female arrives they back off and wait. The female will blood then. It is very important for you to keep control of your dragon and only let them blood. This gives them the quick energy they need for the flight. If you let them eat the entrails then they will be to heavy and the flight may be to short which can be dangerous for the dragons if they don't reach a high enough altitude." Kyraa nods. "They'll want to eat more than anything else..it takes /all/ of your concentration and support to keep them from it. But T'seus is right. If they're high enough...and don't have control because of being to heavy..that /can/ get very dangerous." Andrai doesn't cease in her twitching though, as before, it lessens in its intensity and speed. A slight nod goes to the information consequently imparted upon the willing and unwilling persons of the room. As always, attention snaps to the person in the spot light -- in the next moment, that person becomes Kyraa. This much, at least, sounds ominous enough to be heeded unequivically -- as if the rest wasn't. T'seus nods to Kyraa then adds "Once the female rises the males will give chase. Eventually the green tires and the winning male will catch her. All of the others will return to their lifemates for comfort and such. While the winning pair will fly off together .. literally." Tylia's finger drumming momentarily stops as she listens closely to that bit of information. But sure enough, a moment or so later, it starts up again, probably just to have something to do while listening. T'seus smiles and glances at the green and gold weyrlings more precisely "To finish, usually something you won't have to worry about is the after effects on those non winning riders, though you may run into it when your dragon is not the one doing the flight. It leaves the riders filled with sexual emotions, these emotions don't just magically dissipate after the flight is over. While the holders always bring out the wineskins many find comfort with another, or seclude themselves until teh emotions fade away." T'seus smiles and looks around "Any questions? Or any comment, Kyraa, Amiranda?" Andrai decides to stick with her safe, no comment route all the way until the bitter ends. She does, finally, tune out of the last of what the brownrider has to say, given that she was told she could never, ever lose a flight, and that she had no choice in any of it whatsoever, et cetera. Mayhaps others are tuning out as well, but the first sign of 'Rai's state of absence is the cessation of thumb/lip/attention twitching. Tylia shakes her head in T'seus's direction at his question, her fingers still absently drumming as her eyes flick to Amiranda and Kyraa to see if they have any comments to add. Kyraa shakes her head. "I think that about covers it." She things a moment. "But for all of you male riders...if and when your lifemate loses..the important thing is that you comfort him. The memory span of a dragon is not that long." She smiles. "Help them forget.." Amiranda shakes her head as she considers, "You've done a fine job. The one thing to add, is that, in the case of a goldrider," she blushes, "which only pertains to Tylia, at this class, you will next be dealing with a pending hatching, but that is something you and I can go over at a later date." Andrai still isn't listening. It isn't until some sort of pause passes that attention floats halfway back towards the conversing riders. None of the last few dredges of the lecture had anything whatsoever to do with her. At least the twitching is done. T'seus nods to Amiranda "True. I tend to forget this part." he chuckles softly. Tylia absently runs her fingers through her hair before she nods towards Amiranda with a smile. Now that the lecture seems to have ended, the drumming of her fingers finally stops and she looks almost relieved. T'seus declares the room OOC now. You say "First rule of RP'd mating flights: You do /NOT/ have to have TS. It is entirely up to /BOTH/ riders. If one of the riders doesn't wish to TS, the other rider may not pressure them, or there will be BIG trouble. If you /DO/ choose to TS, please wait until all of the other riders have cleared out of the weyr. Also, make certain you are in a guest weyr or a private room before beginning your RP, because some people may find it offensive, or may be RL underage." You say "The female's rider is in control of the flight. He/she is the one who decides who catches (and someone has to catch ;) if anyone tries to force a catch, he/she have full authority to thwap them and pose something which may make them look pretty darn stupid, or if they persists he/she can ask them to leave the flight as well." Kyraa nodnodnods. "Yep, I've NEVER RPed the aftereffects past a PG-13 rating. They gotta respect that." Andrai chuckles. Tylia grins. You say "If he/she says no OOC, then he/she means no OOC. If he/she says he/she is too tired to run a long flight and that the choice is made within three poses, oh well, that's his/her prerogative. This also extends to predetermined flights, /especially/ with gold flights." You say "As controller of the flight, the green/gold rider sets any rules he/she wants. Generally its one male pose per female dragon pose. He/she also decides when blooding stuff start/end ... and also when you can pose your "catch attempt" pose." You say "It is assumed that the winning riders have sex. However big point I'll emphasise several times TS is NEVER actually expected, or to be forced. For a short time after the flight you can't come out ICly cause .. well .. :) but that doesn't mean you are actually rp'ing it out." Amiranda chuckles and always pretends she and the winner are playing cards :)O You say "Last thing is afterflight stuff. While the two riders are stuck in a weyr together, I strongly encourage them, to take the opportunity to discuss among themselves any consequences of the flight. This can range form "just another flight" to feeling awkward about eachother for awhile, or in sorta major things can lead to semi/permanent relationships, pregnancy, or weyrmating. Whatever it is must be agreed upon by BOTH riders. If can be fun and may also depend on your backgrounds (ie holdbred or weyrbred..?)" You say "One other thing. Not all mating flights must happen on-camera. There are many ways to have a flight. They vary from the 'RP'd flight' to '+mail flights' to 'simply picking a name out of a hat flights'. Some may wish to participate without actually winning. And, if a female's rider sends out +mail for times, or for an off-camera flight, please respond, even if you don't want to win or even participate. Might be depressing for the rider if he/she doesn't get a single answer." You say "Questions? Comments?" Tylia hmms. Not for me. Andrai nopes. Andrai perks. Are we allowed to do a flight? Us greenling types, that is. You say "Those who had the lecture are now allowed to have/participate in mating flights." Tylia hmms. Andrai mwahs. You say "Those who didn't have the lecture CAN'T have or participate in flight!" End of Log. |
